Prepare, Watch, Wait

View of Jerusalem from the Mount of Olives

The Mount of Olives is one of Israel’s treasures. It is mentioned the first time in 2 Samuel 15:30 when David fled from his son, Absalom. Jesus often went to the Mount of Olives to pray. It was here on the mountain that the disciples saw Jesus the last time. He said, “Go and make disciples of all nations baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age” (Matthew 28:18-20). Then the disciples saw Him ascend into Heaven.

Prophecy says Jesus will return to the Mount of Olives when He comes again. “On that day his feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, east of Jerusalem, and the Mount of Olives will split in two from east to west, forming a great valley, with half of the mountain moving north and half moving south” (Zechariah 14:4). Although we don’t know the day, Jesus will triumph over all the earth. Only God’s people will escape His final judgement as described in Matthew 24:15-20.

How can you be sure God will protect you from the chaos and punishment that is inevitable? Jesus said, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned” (Mark 16:16). God doesn’t want anyone to suffer condemnation. “He loved the world so much He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through Him” (John 3:16-17).

You can be prepared for Jesus’ second coming by believing in Him as your Savior and living your life to please Him. Read the Bible and talk with God in prayer every day, and you will learn His promises and commands. Most of all you will learn just how much He loves you. He does not see your shame and guilt once you confess Jesus as Lord. Through Jesus’ sacrificial act, God the Father provided a Robe of Righteousness for you (Isaiah 61:10).

Sit back and be blessed by this short video about the Mount of Olives and see the Bible come to life.

Prayer: Holy Father, you have the hope of eternal life, a beautiful inheritance, in the midst of our very dark world. Teach us your ways and help us to live for you. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

  1. I did enjoy this study of Jesus at the Mount of Olives. I traced that latitude around to the United States and saw that it crossed north (or just south…short term memory) of Kansas…for the heck of it. Maybe wondering if I would want Not to be too close When the valley is created!

Then I thought, that is definitely not what I should think about. My thought is to be sure my lamp wick is trimmed and I have tried to do my best to resist the evil one and to be faithful in my praise to His name and sing of His love and be refreshed in His Mercy. And when I stumbled, be quick to ask forgiveness inHis Name.

In about an hour we will have our weekly Zoom Bible Study group meeting. It has been good to stop and reflect that it doesn’t matter which side of the line I am standing as long as I have Jesus beside me.

Shalom and more blessings to you and Dennis.
