Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and through the Wilderness of Zin. This is where Miriam died and was buried.
There was no water for the congregation, and they grumbled against Moses and Aaron. “Why have you brought the assembly of the Lord into this wilderness, that we should die here, both we and our cattle? And why have you made us come up out of Egypt to bring us to this evil place?” (Numbers 20:4-5).
Moses and Aaron left the assembly and went to the entrance of the tent of meeting. There they fell on their faces. “The glory of the Lord appeared to them, and the Lord spoke to Moses, saying, ‘Take the staff, and assemble the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and tell the rock before their eyes to yield its water” (Numbers 20:6-8).
Water gushed forth, enough water for the people and the livestock. The rock formation you see in the picture above is where Moses struck the rock, and water still springs from there today. Please take time to view the short video of this Wilderness of Zin where God fulfilled His promise: “The wilderness and the dry land shall be glad; the desert shall rejoice and blossom like the crocus; it shall blossom abundantly and rejoice with joy and singing” (Isaiah 35:1-2). At first you will see the desert wilderness. And then you will see a valley in bloom. Who would have thought?
What do you do when you get to the end of you? Be encouraged! That is God’s opportunity. Take your suffering, whatever it is, to the Lord and watch Him bring restoration. “Restore our fortunes, O Lord, like streams in the Negev! Those who sow in tears shall reap with shouts of joy!” (Psalm 126:4-5).
David Ben-Gurion (1886-1973), Israel’s first president, could have been buried anywhere in Israel, but he chose this place of miracles. He kept the words of the prophets on index cards under the glass on his desk (Reflections of God’s Holy Land by Eva Marie Everson and Miriam Feinberg Vamosh).
Prayer: Thank you, Father God, for your word and evidence of your promises kept. Help us to be aware the presence of miracles even in our day. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
